Blow Me
I'm fascinated with words. They inspire, incite, confound, enlighten, elevate, debase, distract, entertain and express. The problem with these handy tools is everyone is rarely reading from the same playbook.
The common example is "I'll kill you," which under the right circumstances is a challenge in a contest or a taunt in a friendly rivalry. But discover a dead body at the scene and you'll have Marcia Clark, or even worse Nancy Grace, spouting off that "we have secured a confession."
And so, like those who may occasionally use a blow torch, or a propane grill, user beware.
I found it funny to get a myriad of reactions to my commentary to Chris who I know well and have no ill-will towards. Some were dismissive ("goodbye") others peacemaking with a historical retrospective on the group's origins and mission. Even others felt there was an undercurrent of nastiness ("throwing stones"), while others seemed to see some humor in a men's club comment that you might just as easily have heard in a locker room.
Urban Dictionary tends to get it as they define "blow me" as:
Just those two words you say when you can't be bothered arguing with someone.
"Stop being such an asshole, your so self centered and" (interruption by you) "oh blow me!"
Now if I riled you up by using two words not even directed at you, well good, I guess; it's nice to feel that rush of blood and break the monotony of timesheets and client calls where you're expected to remain measured and in check. I see MOTY as a group of "goofballs" razzing each other in good spirits (and whenever possible, while imbibing good spirits).
If we have to tread lightly and conform to a series of unwritten rules, I seem to have missed the point. Sure civility has its place, but lets not overdue it here.
Don't take any of it too seriously (least of all my razzing back at Tich who has this "reply all" fixation), and remember, it's just a couple of words.
So, if you can't take a joke, well, ……
